• Mind the Box
Cats can be very particular about litter and litter boxes. You should be, too. Because if your cat isn’t happy, s/he may partake in monkey business outside the litter box. That may be OK for a monkey, but cats should do their business in the litter box.
  • Give ’em Room
Cats aren’t so different than us. They like a little extra comfort when taking care of business. A full-size, easy-to-clean plastic box or disposable pan is your best bet. Generally, use 1 box per cat. Like us, they are often modest, too.
  • X Marks the Box
Once again, much like us, solitude and easy access are better for taking care of business. Keep your cat’s litter box in a convenient, not-too-out-of-the-way area, but away from food. And don’t move it around too much. We’ve all been confused by the location of the restrooms. It’s not fun. If you have the space, consider two litter box locations.
  • The Measure of a Good Litter
Generally, about 3 inches of non-clumping clay litter, or 1 – 2 inches of scoopable litter should get the job done. Some say less, some say more. Only you and your cat will know the correct amount.
  • The Litter’s Carefree. The Litter Box Isn’t.
Remove solid, waste at least once per day and conventional, non-clumping and scoopable litters alike. Replace the entire contents of non-clumping clay weekly. And remember, to replace the clumps you removed with fresh to keep the level up.
  • Consider a Cat Mat for Extra Clean
If your cat tracks litter, place a washable mat or rug under the litter box where your cat steps to catch litter from her paws. Be sure your cat likes the surface so they don’t jump over it from inside the litter box or avoid the box altogether.
  • Mind the Box II
Wash the litter box with soap and warm water and rinse well every time you change litter completely. Box liners are great for helping make litter box maintenance a bit more carefree.
  • Litter Switcheroo
Your cat may not like new litter, so go slow. Mix the new litter in with the old in a ratio of about 1/3 new to 2/3 old. Increase the new litter gradually until you have a total switch-over.
